So far, very good and easy to set up for tethering
So far, just by following the video instructions for tethering iPhone’s internet (using iphone’s hotspot) everything went very satisfactorily. I was able to set up my Wyze pan cam in my office , at work, where I usually have an enterprise wifi connection (that doesnt allow any private wireless cameras to their wifi network). By using my iPhone’s hotspot I could use this router to broadcast a wifi signal that my wifi camera could detect. I used the browser from my iphone 11, to keep things easy. If you log into the Admin portal (gateway) while using a computer, the user interface might look different and can complicate things for those who are not used to working with computers.I made sure I turned off the 5Ghz bandwidth because my wifi camera only connects to 2.4Ghz.Then I followed the steps from the video shown on here (on amazon), where pictures show the features of the router. Then I renamed the SSID of router to make it less obvious on the network from work. I also changed the password for the SSID to something else because by default the password is “goodlife”, and anyone could use your wifi if they see your default SSID (GL – ….) and google the manufacturer’s default password for that device. In case you wanna use it (as I did) to connect your security wifi camera on your iphone in your office , or even in your car, while using your phone’s hotspot, you can follow the instructions from the video of this router from amazon. You’ll have to connect your iphone to the router at some point , according to the instructional video (I used the USB port too) , and then put your Wyze pan camera in set up mode, follow the steps for setting up your camera, and you’re connected.I noticed that the connection might not be stable based on how good your Hotspot connection is in that area. That causes my router to show a “growing blue light ” on the router as if it would keep try to get internet from the iphone. My LTE data in my office is bad because the building affects my cell signal. But Im glad because I can still record with my security camera even after i disconnect from the camera to leave home for the day. The camera keeps recording after that on its 256GB microSD card. And I can review the recordings next day on my phone’s Wyze app, when I connect to the router. So, the point is that this router helped me achieve what other pocket routers like TPLink, could not. The easy user interface for tethering made the difference, plus the instructional video.I gotta say that this router still requires a basic willingness to learn how to use a computer or an iphone, because even the concept of “tethering” could be too difficult to people if they ‘re not used to spending some time with experimenting with technology. Shalom!

Handy, hackable travel device
Overall this is a handy device and an awesome value for the price. The hardware is lightweight, compact, and very easy to travel with. I bought the device primary to use as a travel NAS device, as I had loaded up multimedia on a 5TB USB hard drive that I wanted to share across multiple devices (tablets, phones, VR headset, etc.). It’s impressive that this device is so configurable, virtually as comprehensive as my much more expensive Netgear Orbi home network gear. You need to be technically savvy in order to get the most of out of this device, though. As an engineer I actually think that it’s pretty cool that this little $35 device has Open WRT installed, has SSH access, and has a whole bunch of settings you can tweak to exactly configure this router for your home or travel network. But I wouldn’t buy this expecting complete plug-and-play usability except for the most basic features (sharing an internet connection). If you are technically adept and patient this won’t be an issue, just be forewarned.NOTE that many of the advertised features are only available in the 3.x version of the firmware, such as file sharing and DLNA support. The router comes shipped with the 4.x version, which according the GL.iNet forums, had many of the features removed in the 4.x release in order to preserve disk space. So you will actually need to downgrade the device in order to get back the preinstalled functionality restored. The good news is that the user forums are actually quite active and the company and other users have been very responsive in answering various technical support questions. Technically, some of the removed functionality can be reinstalled on the 4.x firmware, but after some experimentation I could never get it quite right, so I decided that the downgrade route was a better option. On 3.x, the device works flawlessly and handily supported my use case with zero issues – it mounted the 5TB HDD fine, provided it enough power, and the SAMBA file sharing support was very stable.

If you’re interested in networking, it’s fun to have one of these around just to play with, let alone the benefits it offers if you travel often. It runs OpenWRT behind the scenes with a nice, custom GUI overtop. Not only can it act as a Wi-Fi repeater, it can go from Wi-Fi to ethernet, ethernet to Wi-Fi, and act as a small switch. It has built in support for multiple VPN types, including Wireguard, which is by far the best protocol these days. It’s very fast and easy to set up, with connecting to the Wireguard peers happening very quickly after activation. You can set the switch on the side to do all sorts of things, including turning your VPN on/off. It also has built-in support for Tor, so you can have a separate Wi-Fi network connected to Tor if you want. You can also directly access the OpenWRT GUI behind the scenes, and you can install all sorts of different networking software packages. I’ve barely tapped into the stuff this thing can accomplish, and I’m already very satisfied with the price. I think if you want to install a lot of the software, you’d maybe want to find one that has more Flash built-in, but even this model has enough to install and play around with quite a bit. You can SSH in and get access to the Linux system running everything, which is oodles of fun and just begging to be customized. If you just want to play around with networking without messing with your main access point or router, this is a great device for that. If you travel often, you can easily set up a Wireguard peer on your home network which you can then connect to from anywhere in the world, allowing full access to your home network devices and also encrypting your traffic when using untrusted WiFi or LTE/5G. With an external USB LTE/5G modem, it can also connect to the internet that way, but you can also tether your phone to it and still route all your traffic through the VPN. Every businessperson who travels and stays in hotels should have one of these.

GREEN GHOST TECH REVIEWS –
I recently purchased this unit, and Iâve been thoroughly impressed with its performance and features. As someone who values flexibility and control in their network setup, this device is truly a powerhouse. Itâs not just your average routerâitâs packed with advanced capabilities that make it perfect for tech enthusiasts and professionals alike. Why I Like This Unit:One of the standout features for me is its OpenVPN access, which allows for secure and private browsing. Setting up OpenVPN is incredibly straightforward, and it works seamlessly, giving me peace of mind when using my network across various devices.Additionally, I love the ability to install apps like Docker using Luci, which is part of the OpenWRT backbone. OpenWRT provides a level of customization and control thatâs hard to find in most consumer-grade routers. With Luciâs web interface, itâs easy to manage and install a wide range of apps and services. Iâve been able to set up Docker containers and manage them directly on the device, which opens up so many possibilities for automation, networking, and even running lightweight server tasks.Pros:- OpenVPN access for secure browsing and remote access- OpenWRT-based, giving full control over network settings and software- Luci interface makes app installations like Docker easy and user-friendly- Excellent Wi-Fi range and solid overall performance- Compact design with reliable heat management- Great value for the amount of advanced features it offersCons:- May have a slight learning curve for beginners not familiar with OpenWRT or Luci- Initial setup can take a bit longer due to the extensive customization options- USB ports could benefit from faster speeds, but they are adequate for most usesConclusion:In summary, this unit is an absolute gem for anyone looking for more than just a simple router. The combination of OpenVPN support and OpenWRTâs flexibility really sets it apart from the competition. The ability to install apps like Docker through the Luci interface opens up a world of possibilities, making this device much more than a routerâitâs a highly customizable network hub. While there may be a slight learning curve for those unfamiliar with OpenWRT, once you get the hang of it, the potential is endless. The pros far outweigh the minor cons, and for the price, youâre getting an incredible amount of features that are typically only found in much more expensive devices. Highly recommended for anyone looking to take control of their home or office network!
